There are few things that could go wrong on a wine tour in the Cape. However, one of the challenges that wine-lovers face is choosing a designated driver for their exploration of the local wine farms, where there will certainly be tastings and samplings aplenty. Hermanus Wine Hoppers has formulated a fabulous solution – a hop-on, hop-off wine tour through the magnificence of the Hemel en Aarde Valley.
This tour starts from the offices in the whale-watching town of Hermanus and proceeds from there to visit up to six of the local wine farms. Tours are conducted in comfortable safari vehicles. On hot, summer days, the vehicle’s canopy comes off and guests can feel the wind in their hair as they hop from world-class farm to world-class farm. Some of the wineries that may appear on the itinerary include Bouchard Finlayson Winery, La Vierge, Newton Johnson Winery, and Whalehaven. There is a fixed route to ensure that visitors get to taste a good selection of the local wines, while enjoying the prettiness of the surrounds.
At the vineyards, visitors will be able to taste the various wines, as well as to purchase them at great prices. These wines are ideal for gifts, or to enjoy with friends and family at home. South Africa’s wines are rated amongst the world’s best, and this is an opportunity not to be missed.
In addition to the vineyards and wine farms, visitors to Hermanus will, no doubt, revel in being in such gorgeous countryside. Explore it more fully by embarking on one of the many hiking or cycling trails nearby. From July to December, the whales are out in full force, so keep an eye on the ocean to see these massive mammals as they spyhop, breach and lobtail in the nearby waters. Hermanus is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town.
