This rare collectables, Africana, antiquarian and out-of-print book shop is a must if you are even vaguely a book lover (and who isn't?).
Hemingways looks as though it stepped off the plane from Dickensian England and walked up the coast as far as Hermanus, where it supplanted itself on the Harbour Road, a beacon to all book lovers.
Just look out for the green and red exterior; there should be an old-fashioned bicycle leaning against the doorframe - it's Beth, the owner's Raleigh. Her husband, Noel will probably be propping up the counter, having a chin wag with the locals (the store has something of a cult following).
You only have to step inside to escape into another world. Not only are the shelves bursting at the seams with a combination of first editions, coffee-table books, biographies and out of print items, but every nook and cranny is a tribute to deviant, eccentric charm - porcelain figurines, antique chairs, scatter cushions, typewriters, postcards, paintings and other bric-a-brac that hail back to 20 years ago when the shop originally opened its doors as a purveyor of collectables.
A trailer-load of books put paid to any such notions and merely reinforced the owners' love affair with the world of literature; both are self-confessed book addicts.
If you're in the neighbourhood do not give the opportunity a miss. You might want to set aside at least an hour as the collection of books is captivating.
Whoever says the Kindle means the demise of the novel should visit Hemingways.
