A man by the name of Christoffel Esterhuizzen became the first owner of ‘Het Hartenberg’ in 1704 and planted vines throughout the farm until he boasted 10 000 wines in 1718. The first official winemaker arrived on the scene in 1928 when his family bought the farm and Mrs Hampf extended the vineyards and turned the farm into the picturesque one it is today and planted trees.
Currently Ken Mackenzie’s daughters still own and invest into this farm which is situated on the northeast facing slopes of the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch region. Hartenberg’s winemaker, Carl Schultz, has been widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading producers of Shiraz for almost 40 years.
The farm’s key wines are Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. Their white wines include Chardonnay, Weisser (Rhine) Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Head down to Hartenberg Wine Estate to sample some of the finest wines, enjoy a summer luncheon served in the garden, grab a picnic for along the wetland trail and let the kids enjoy the playground provided. Tours of the underground cellar are also available.
