About Groot Eiland
Groot Eiland is one of 23 wineries in the scenic region of the Breedekloof just an hour away from Cape Town. It’s one of the regions where a day visit is not enough. There is too much beauty to take in, spots to go fishing, mountain trails to hike and outdoor activities such as horse riding and quad biking to enjoy. Groot Eiland was established in 1961 with 13 members whom have expanded to 31 members.
The estate can be found at the slopes of the Du Toits Kloof Mountains where the soil is fertile and the vineyard’s terroir yields tasty wines. The name, Groot Eiland, means Big Island and is attributed to the fact that the cellar and farm is practically surrounded by the waters flowing through the Breede and Molenaars Rivers. This valley is unique in that it is found between the Atlantic Ocean and the Klein Karoo which lends itself to a combination of coastal and continental climates. The soils are made up of rocky mountain soils, heavy black soils beside the river and deep alluvial sandy soils which tend to dry out easily. All these factors contribute to their delicious wines.
