If you find yourself in the Bottelary Hills, pop into the beautiful Goede Hoop wine farm for a tasting. Just off the old road between Kuils River and Stellenbosch and down in the valley of Botterlary Kloof is where youíll discover it. The Bestbier family first bought this farm in 1928 and today itís still run by the family with Pieter Bestbier (now a third generation winemaker) at the helm.
These vineyards require no irrigation due to sufficient annual rainfall and the soils are best suited to red wine cultivation. Goede Hoop has been producing Shiraz since 1975 and this wine is a blend between young and old wines matured for 8 months. If you enjoy complex fruity wine, this give this one a try. The Sauvignon Blanc is the first white wine to be produced on the estate. Itís a dry crispy wine with tropical flavours.
You can enjoy a relaxed tasting with one of the winemakers which makes it that much more personal. Whether youíre a wine connoisseur or a newbie with no clue on the winemaking process, they will answer all your questions whilst you enjoy their farmís wine. The rustic tasting room has a big fireplace, wooden tables and wines dating back to 1974. Definitely a wine estate worth a visit in Winter.
