About Glen Erskine Boutique Wine Estate
Retiring from careers in the food and fruit shipping industries, Reine and Annalien Dalton bought a 14.6 ha apple and pear farm in the Elgin Valley in 2005. As many of the orchards were not well cared for, apple orchards were replanted in 2006 and the pear orchards were removed. Given the cool conditions within the valley, they decided to plant 5 ha of vineyards with the focus on Sauvignon Blanc.
Annalien set about restoring the gardens, homestead and farm sheds amongst beautiful 100 year old oak trees. A vehicle workshop was transformed into a boutique wine cellar which Annalien looks after. Reine farms the land and cares for the orchards and grapes. They grow the cultivars of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier. Sauvignon grape variety comes from the Bordeaux region of France and together with Semillon are used to create Sauternes, a dessert wine of the Loire Valley region.
The flavour can range from very grassy to rather tropical. Semillon was once known in South Africa as the ‘groen’ (green) grape and claimed the role as the dominant grape variety. Sample a wine from their range including Glen Erskine Reserve 2010, Glen Erskine Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (sold out), Glen Erskine Reserve 2011 and Glen Erskine Sauvignon Blanc 2011.
