Freshwater angling in the Olifants River is one of the many reasons why Clanwilliam has gained such popularity over the years as a holiday destination. The river has the richest endemic fish population in the country.
The river is approximately 285 km long with a catchment area of 46, are220 km², with the middle catchment area falling in the Clanwilliam area. The Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dams are located in the river and provide water for the towns and farms along the river.
Endemic species such as Clanwilliam Sand Fish, Barnard’s Klipbaber and the Clanwillian Yellow Fish are not found anywhere else. Permits can be obtained from the Cape Nature Conservation office for anglers for fish such as Rainbow Trout and Bass.
