About Fort Simon Wine Estate
This estate in the slopes of the Bottelary Hills has 61 hectares under vineyards, experiences much-needed sea breezes and is quite something to behold.
You will feel transported back in time as you first spot a castle-like building which happens to be the cellar which opened in 1998. Past the moat and over a suspension bridge, you’ll make your way into Fort Anna i.e. the tasting room. These fascinating structures have been inspired by Namibian stone houses and medieval European castles.
The estate gets its name as the cellar is housed in the Fort Simon castle. When Dr Simon Uys and his wife Anna bought the farm (called Houmoed) it consisted only of old vines. The 1970’s saw the planting of grape vines with wine maker Marinus Bredell encouraging superb wines from the crop. He has been hand-crafting wines for 35 years; hence the estate’s offerings of reds and whites are highly sort after.
For wine tasting with a difference, visit Fort Simon with its romantic, medieval settings. Most of the maturation cellar is filled with French oak barrels to produce the variety of Fort Simon wines as well as their entry level range, Fortress Hill.
