Charles Back, the owner of Fairview, was one of South Africa’s first producers to plant Viognier vineyards and bottled our country’s first single varietal Petite Sirah. In 1997, he started the Fairvalley Workers Association which sought to provide ownership of land to Fairview’s workers and families. He gave land to the association and assisted in establishing a wine brand which is owned by the workers association.
1998 saw the first Fairvalley wine, Chenin Blanc launched which was quickly sold out to a UK wine importer. The funds raised from wine sales was utilised to build eight houses for the founding members.
All members of the Fair Valley Association have many years of great experience in the production of wine, grapes and packaging etc. Their slogan is “The hands that work the soil feed the soul” and quality of the wines are en par with those of Fairview due to their partnership. All grapes are harvested from Fairview vineyards and most are exported to the USA, UK, Japan, UK and Finland. The world-class wine range includes the Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and a White Blend (comprised of Chenin Blanc & Sauvignon Blanc), Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pinotage.
