Start at the Waterfront, Cape Town

About Fairest Cape & Township Cycle

We start out at daybreak, meeting at the world-renowned Cape Grace Hotel in the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. We transfer to our starting point on Signal Hill, high above the city on Table Mountain.

We meander down the mountain on custom assembled, carbon fibre road bicycles, past the imposing Lions Head, with magnificent views of Cape Town.

From here we wind our way through the upmarket seaside suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay, home to Cape Town's prime real estate and a selection of postcard-perfect beaches.

From Camps Bay, we make our way along the stunning Atlantic Seaboard, through the village of Bakoven, nestled at the foot of the famous Twelve Apostles. These are a series of 17 precipitous peaks (all sharp cliff faces) ranging from 700m to 1067m above the Atlantic Ocean, which cast a magnificent spell over the communities below. We stop off at the pristine Oudekraal Nature Reserve for a well-deserved picnic spread on a secluded beach with the majestic mountains behind you.

We transfer over the mountains to the lower slopes of Chapman's Peak, one of Africa's most beautiful mountain passes. After an invigorating cycle over the pass, with amazing views of sky and hues of blue and green ocean, we descend to the beach where a glass of ice-cold, sparkling wine awaits, as reward for the day's activity.

After a sumptuous lunch spread, we hop back into the bus and make our way to Masiphumelele township, a shantytown just outside the seaside village of Kommetjie. Masiphumelele means "We will succeed" in Xhosa, and is home to about 30,000 inhabitants, most of whom are unemployed and live in poor conditions. We take a cycle through the township with a local guide, getting to see a side of South Africa that escapes most tourist brochures. We visit a local preschool, see traditional dancing by a Sangoma (African healer) and sample authentic African cuisine to boot. And by undertaking this tour, guests are putting money back into a community that needs it most, a socially responsible and environmentally friendly form of travel.

We return to the vehicle and guests are transferred back to their guesthouse after the Eco-Active adventure of a lifetime.

NB: We can tailor-make this tour to suit your preference, shorten it, lengthen it, add more or less exercise - just let us know and we will gladly put together something special just for you! It can be done as a half-day tour (sunrise / sunset), excluding the township tour, at a reduced cost.
