70 km outside of Cape Town is the spectacular Elgin Valley with its set of mountains surrounding it and fertile soils known for yielding premium wines. Itís no wonder that Elgin Vintners have found their home here and are run by a partnership of six grape growers. Each member brings their own finesses, expertise and skills to their business, but it is wine maker and viticulturalist, Paul Wallace, who guides the process. Paul has over 30 years of experience in the wine industry.
Their plantings cover 101 hectares and their white varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viogner and Rhine Riesling. The red varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The very first planting of Semillon was harvested in 2011. And they produce 9 labels. Elgin Vintners outsource vinification to winemakers who are experience with the particular variety. These include Jeff Grier of Villiera (Sauvignon Blanc), Niels Verburg of Luddite (Shiraz and Viognier), Nico Grobler of Eikendal (Merlot Rosť), Kevin Grant (Chardonnay) and Gavin Patterson (Pinot Noir). They produce 20 000 cases per annum.
