In the 1966, the Joubert family bought the Elgin Heights farm and farmed deciduous fruit for about thirty years. Before this, they had been farming wine in Stellenbosch since 1913 on Rozendal farm and it proved a great transitions to move their grape farming to Elgin. It’s position in the cool Elgin valley along with ocean breezes make it perfect for creating fine wines.
The farm Elgin Heights was purchased by the Joubert family in 1966, and farmed as a deciduous fruit unit until 1999. Owner Ryk Joubert produces wine under the name of Elgin Heights even though the farm is now called Smarag meaning ‘Emerald’ in Afrikaans and referring to the green valley.
The 60 hectare farm has the following cultivars planted including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Viognier. D. D Joubert studied viticulture and brought his knowledge to the business in 1998. He then carefully selected the Sauvignon Blanc grapes and produced the 2007 Elgin Heights Sauvignon Blanc with Thinus Kruger. Sample this full bodied Sauvignon Blanc with its upfront nose and underlying minerality.
