Drostdy-Hof Wine Estate was named after Tulbagh’s magistrate’s building called, De Oude Drostdy, which is a national monument built in 1804. It was first established in 1964 at the foot slopes of the Winterhoek Mountains. There’s a wonderful experience awaiting you in the De Oude Drostdy Manor where you can enjoy a candlelit tasting of their wines.
The Drostdy-Hof Chardonnay 2010 vintage won a gold medal at the 2011 Decanter World Wine Awards in London. The retail price was only R35, but went to show that the price is not always indicative of the quality. The grapes for this vintage came from vineyards in Stellenbosch, Malmesbury and Franschhoek.
Winemaker Pieter Badenhorst believes that vines are like people in many ways. “They need a little stress - not too much - to give of their best. By monitoring the water stress of the vineyards very carefully, it is possible to limit the grape yields to ensure optimal quality fruit with excellent flavour concentration.”
This particular wine is great with seafood, poultry, salads and dishes made with cream. Drostdy-Hof wines have a variety of great flavours and fruitiness. They are easy-drinking wines and are known to be authentic Cape wines.
