About Drakensig Wine Farm
With a name meaning “View of Dragons”, you’ve got to wonder what kind of a view that is given that Drakensig is perched with the scenic Franschhoek Valley. Owner, Marais Viljoen, is among many wine makers who have sought to create spectacular wines in this rich soil since the 1600’s. As owner and wine maker, he continually produces young, premium wines.
This boutique cellar between the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains used most of its land to grow grapes and 1ha of olives. Their dry whites include an Unwooded Chardonny and Sauvignon Blanc. The dry, fruity Drakensig Sauvignon Blanc 2001 has tropical flavours pair well with seafood or goats’ cheeses. Their red wine selection includes Cabernet Sauvignon (Wooded), Merlot (Wooded), Pinotage (Wooded) and Shiraz (Wooded).
Whilst most boutique wine cellars have prices to match their exclusivity, at Drakensig, this is not the case and wines are affordable and delicious. Drakensig wines are matured in French and American oak for 12 months before bottling in their cellar which has a 150 ton capacity. When wine tasting, the owner Marais Viljoen will host you and is known to be friendly, funny and down to earth and adds to the wine tasting experience.
