This boutique wine estate is said to have been named after the previous owner’s wife and daughters. He shortened the names Doris, Merle and Shirley and formed an anagram.
When current owners Paul and Sunette purchased the farm in 1986, there were old vines throughout the property. Together with wine maker, Kowie du Toit, their wines have won awards at various shows such as the Veritas and Fairburn Capital Wine Shows. Their labels give clues as to what the view is like; from the vineyards, you can enjoy panoramic Table Mountain views. Positioned on Kanonkop Hill where a cannon was fired to warn Stellenbosch burghers of enemy ships.
The estate has plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz cultivars. 2001 saw Sauvignon Blanc being marketed, then a Shiraz 2003 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and Rose 2005. The estate’s maturation cellar holds French oak barrels where red wines are matured. Once grapes are picked by hand at a stage of optimal ripeness, bunches are also sorted by hand to ensure a natural process. If you enjoy a full bodied white wine with fruit flavours, try their Sauvignon Blanc and all Rosé lovers, Dormershire’s is dry with a berry character and has been wooded.
