Just four minutes from Franschhoek village is a wine farm dating back to 1855 with a name meaning ‘God Given’. French-Mauritian, Robert Maingard acquired the farm in 1987 and later a man named Hennie du Toit was born on the farm which was sold when he was 13 years old. Who was to know that he would return and become the farm manager? Winemaker Stephan du Toit aims to continually reshape his philosphy in order to keep up with South Africa’s innovative wine industry. Wines on offer include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay barrel fermented, Chardonnay unwooded, Rose, Noble late harvest, Methode Cap Classique, Belair Rose and Viognier.
Perched in the Franschhoek mountainside, this winery makes for wonderful summer picnics and lounging on the grass with your wine and a cheese platter in hand. When the Cape weather decides to get cold, this is no reason to stay away as your food and wine can be enjoyed beside the fire.
The restaurant is a cellar-styled one with a spectacular view over the valley and serves French Huguenot Provincial cuisine, African, Asian and Mauritian influence. Watch the sunset from the terrace and sip on one of their wines or a Dieu Donne Ale. You can’t miss having a look at the glass enclosed micro-brewery.
