Deetlefs Wine Estate is located below the Du Toitskloof Mountains in the Breedekloof and is the third oldest South African wine estate under the ownership of the same family. Nicolaas Johannes came to De Grootte Eiland in the Goudini-area between 1816 to 1822 where Deetlefs is now situated. His son built the main homestead in 1863 and together with his children, the first winery was established. Deetlefs was registered as a wine estate in November 1977, new vines were planted and production over the next 19 years.
Philippus Petrus Deetlefs’ wines won many awards and for the first time, a fortified Hanepoot a won the Champion Young Wine Competition wine which resulted in his nomination as Winemaker of the Year. The cellar has been modernized and the family-owned wine estate is transforming into a Wine Group based on the values of the Deetlef’s family which has passed down over six generations. 105 hectares have been planted under vines with 60% white and 40% red. 1.8 million litres are produced per annum. This estate is well worth a drive to Rawsonville and provides a memorable tasting experience for wine lovers. There are wines to suit all tastes and budgets and quite a few are available for tasting. You can taste wines from their Stone Cross or Deetlef’s range and only one premium wine from their Deetlef’s Familie range can be tasted.
