About De Villiers Wine Estate
“The Alchemist of nature’s creation of wine” This is the foundation upon which De Villiers wine estate has been built, and with more than three hundred years in the industry, they clearly know what they are doing. In fact, long before the De Villiers family settled in South Africa’s Paarl wine-making district, the family had been wine makers.
When they arrived in the Cape (having fled France) in 1689 they held with them a letter from the Dutch East India Company informing current governor of the Cape, Simon Van der Stel, that he should assist them as they had a good knowledge of viticulture. The family has a fascinating history that they trace back to 778AD with tales of vine cuttings taken from Ancient Babylonia and Lebanon. Wine has also been exported internationally from the farm since 1770. Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvedre and Shiraz together with Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay are nurtured and crafted into the finest of South African wines.
The vision of De Villiers Wines is to “maintain and perpetuate” the proud traditions that have proven to be so successful generation after generation. This is all headed up by Villiers de Villiers, a tenth generation Vigneron.
