De Trafford Winery can be found perched between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg slopes on the Mont Fleur farm.
When the Trafford family bought the farm in 1976, it was merely grazing land. Due to the high altitude of the slopes, it was discovered that this land would be perfectly suited to growing red grapes.
Quota restrictions halted all plans of winemaking until the family finally planted a small vineyard in 1983 which friends and family could enjoy. Winemakers in the region gave great advice and experience was gained in the best possible place, the Bordeaux area in France, until the restrictions were lifted and the first harvest could take place in 1992.
The vineyard was replanted in 1994 and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc grapes from surrounding farms are used in addition to Mont Fleur’s harvest. This boutique winery produces 3500 cases per annum.
In addition to white and red wines, the winery produces Straw wine called Vin Paille which is the first in the country. The process to make it, involves drying Chenin Blanc grapes on straw under the oak trees to concentrate the sugar and fruit flavours necessary for a dessert wine. Followed by fermentation in French oak barrels.
