Bonfoi estate’s original name was Aan den Weg which was the road joining the regions of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Ann den Weg was given to Jan ven Reede by the Governor at the time, W.A. van der Stel. There were many owners until two French ladies bought it and renamed it Bonfoi which means ‘Good Faith’.
The Joubert family also took ownership of the farm and once a Joubert daughter married Le Grange, he took it over. Once he could no longer farm it, Johannes van der Westhuizen, who had worked on the farm, bought it. His sons Christoff and George took over. Christoff son has kept the family’s winemaking traditions alive.
This estate is a hidden gem with a charming tasting room in an old building and great tasting wines. Assistants are friendly and the wine is surprisingly well priced. You be lucky enough to meet the owner and winemaker Johannes van der Westhuisen who share some interesting facts about the estate. Brace yourself for delicious red wines.
