Springing forth out of Paarl, South Africa - a wine-making region laden in history and in excellence - comes Black Pearl, a wine estate where the focus is on the flavor, where quantity is limited and quality is not. A family run farm from “berry to bottle” the 240ha Rhenosterkop Farm (upon which Black Pearl Wines are produced) belongs to the Nash family, whom relocated to South Africa from New-England in 1995.
A walk around their farm, which they are only too happy to extend to you, will reveal that the vineyards are only one part of its enchantment; they have alpacas, ponies and olive groves too.
Daughter Mary-Lou is wine-maker and has two South African born daughters here cementing the family’s roots in the Boland. Over the last ten years and six vintages the wine-making process has been an all-women’s affair with father Lance restoring the bio-diversity to the area - with 184ha of the 240ha farm being covered in pristine Renosterveld.
The name “Black Pearl” was inspired by the Paarl Rock, which looks like a giant black pearl after it has rained. Similarly the name of their blend “Oro” comes from the “God Oro” The king of the firmament whom, legend has it, gave a black pearl to the ocean as a gift.
