About Beyerskloof Wine Farm

This farm was originally named Nooitgedacht and when Beyers Truter bought the farm, he became the sixth generation of Beyers to farm this land.

Beyer’s Truter love of wine begun rarely early in high school where to his parents dismay he began collecting wines. Once he tasted a 1972 Simonsig Pinotage who longed to know how to make it and found that the secret lay in the new oak barrels. He worked hard at blending this cultivar of crossing Pinot Noir and Hermitage and in 1991.

He found Beyerskloof in 1988 overlooking the Simonsberg and is convinced that while winemaking needs passion, prayer is necessary for successful wine. These beautiful wines are produced by the Bouwland winery which is now owned by the farm workers themselves, who bought the majority shares in the property and now run the farm. Along with Beyers Truter who still has an interest in the farm, the team have produced these delicious wines.

He has since added a modern cellar and tasting room and barrel maturation cellar for new French Nevers oak barriques (pertinent to Truter’s wine making philosophy).

Beyerskloof was the first wine in the Cape to experience early maturation in new barriques. Beyer is adamant that Pinotage has more anti-oxidants than any other red wine. He has also started a Faith Fund to support education for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Try the signature dish of a ‘Pinotage burger’ at the Beyerskloof restaurant.
