Through clever design, the Berg River Dam efficiently captures winter rainfall and stores it for supply to the Cape Town region during the drier summer months. This, the first dam in the country which was designed, built and is now operated according to guidelines set by the World Commission on Dams, is 68m in height. Situated on the Berg river the dam is a focal point of the entire Berg Water Project.
Careful planting of indigenous plants particularly on the downstream face of the dam wall has resulted in the Dam naturally blending into the landscape, thereby lessening the impact on the environment but still providing an important function.
"The scheme was designed to maintain the ecological integrity of the river through the release of water through low and high flows that coincide as closely as possible with natural flow of the Berg River. It is the first dam in South Africa where provision is made for flood releases for environmental purposes" ~ Reference: Wikipedia.org
