In February 1837, Beaufort West became the first municipality in South Africa with its own Town Hall. Take a drive down Donkin Street and visit the Beaufort west Museum, where you are bound to learn something fascinating. There are three buildings in the complex making up the museum, the Sendingkerk, Stadthuis and the Sendingpastorie.
The Sendingkerk, built in 1871 is a little Dutch reformed mission church where Reverend Adam Barnard preached. His son Chris Barnard was a professor and was the first person in the world to perform a heart transplant. These buildings, including the Barnard family house, can be explored and display a collection of the towns and churches cultural history, outfits worn, pictures, ammunition collections and much more.
