The winemaker of Babylon’s Peak Private Cellar is Stephan Basson. The cellar is built on the farm, Nooitgedacht, which the Bassons have owned for four generations. The winery gets its name from the high granite peak found on the farm which locals call ‘Babylonstoren.’
Their private cellar is perfectly positioned between Malmesbury and Paarl and on the rugged slopes of the Paardeberg. Wine was produced in the old cellar on the farm until 1948 where a farmer’s cooperative was formed. Stephan renovated the cellar in the early 2000’s and began a journey to produce wine there once more.
This private cellar focuses on Rhône-style cultivars such as Mourvédre, Grenache and Viognier. Stephan believes that the Chenin Blanc and Shiraz are the Paardeberg’s iron cultivars. Perhaps there is some truth in this as the Chenin Blanc snapped up the Veritas gold award for three harvests in a row.
You are welcome to visit the farm, linger a bit longer and go hiking or fishing. Enjoy some of their wines which include; Babylon's Peak Private Cellar Chenin Blanc, Babylon's Peak Private Cellar Shiraz, Babylon's Peak Private Cellar Viognier and Babylon's Peak Private Cellar Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz.
