Tony Mossop and his wife Lyn started Axe Hill on the outer regions of Calitzdrop in 1993. The name comes from stone hand tools which were found on the farm and said to be used by Pre-historic humans.
This farm is based in the Klein Karoo wine region known for its fortified wines.
Calitzdorp is also known as the Port Capital of South Africa and is assisted by dry, arid conditions. The very first vintage of 1997 Axe Hill Cape Vintage Port was awarded with 5 stars in the John Platter Guide. One vintage of wine is produced per year from Portugues varietals such as Tinta Barroca, Souzao and Touriga Nacional. Once the wines are matured in French oak barrels once they have been hand sorted and crushed by feet ensuring ultimate flavours can be reached.
Mike Nebe is the current winemaker and partner and does a great job to ensure the quality of wine remains consistent. Their delicious Dry White Port is made using Chenin Blanc grapes from the region and combines old and young vintages.
