About Avondrood Vineyards

The boutique cellar of Avondrood was purchased by teacher and rugby player Nicolaas Christoffel van Rensburg in 1959 and together with his wife, Eljoh van der Merwe, they built the farm into the estate it is today and delivered their grapes to the Louwshoek Cellar.

Albertus van Rensburg took over from this father and has farmed the land since 1995. He had the same passion for wine and after studying at Stellenbosch University, he travelled to America and gained experience working on a wine farm in Sonoma Valley, California. He grew acquainted to the conditions of growing vineyards on hillside slopes and when he returned, he was able to match the soil types with specific mountain terroir sites.

Albertus established the boutique cellar on Avondrood and began planting Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. And at a later stage, Viognier, Chardonnay and a red blend named The Nicholas (after his Father) was added to the range.

The main varieties planted on the estate are Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. The more recently planted varieties include Weiser Riesling, Pinot Gris and Malbec. Both the mountain winds and the rocky soils have a cooling effect on the vineyards and ensure quality wines.
