Ataraxia is positioned in Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge just west of Africa’s southernmost tip. This Walker Bay region has a mild climate due to its location near to the Atlantic Ocean. The soil is comprised from combinations of Table Mountain Sandstone, Cape Granite and Bokkeveld Shale and all contribute to the great wines produced on the farm.
Kevin and Hanli Grant partnered with friends to buy 50 hectares of land in 2004 with the intention of planting vines. Kevin has always had an interest in winemaking and after studying cellar technology, he visited Australia, France and Oregon to learn from their harvests.
Most of their vines are planted on south facing slopes and Kevin has discovered that Chardonnay and Pinot noir are the best vines to grow given the terroir. At the moment there are 12 hectares planted to these two cultivars. The wine lounge is something to behold and was constructed as a chapel with a very beautiful position. Sample and enjoy the three wines in their range: Sauvignon Blanc, chardonnay and a red blend called serenity.
