Andre and Freda Hamersma’s dream of becoming winemakers began whilst they were working in Joburg as bankers. They first bought a ton of Shiraz grapes in 2002. And when they went to Cape Town on a winemaking excursion they used a room next to Freda’s parent’s garage in Riebeeck Kasteel.
It was very simple in that they use borrowed bins, two barrels, had air-conditioning and swimming pool pump installed. Their first winemaking attempt was full of setbacks and surprises but the wine finally reached the barrels. They thought of the name Anatu, who is the goddess of the earth and sky. Their logo is that of a swan which symbolized their dreams of cultivating elegant, unique wines.
They loved their first batch of wine and thereafter rented cellar space in Stellekaya cellar. 2003 saw them win their first award: Double gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards. Once they moved to Stellenbosch to full realise their dream to make wine fulltime and took on French Micu Narunsky as their talented winemaker. Take your pick from their Family Blend Red, Fugue Rose 2011 or Anatu Fugue Red 2010.
