The Amy Biehl foundation was created in remembrance of American exchange student Amy Biel who was a gifted student at the University of the Western Cape who wanted to make a difference in South Africa.
Amy worked closely with the ANC on woman's rights and the new constitution and helped register voters for South Africa’s first free elections. Her life was tragically taken from her in the township of Guguletu in an act of political brutality where she was stabbed and stoned to death.
Her story continues and so the Amy Biehl foundation was created as a non-profit organization focusing on empowering youth and steering away from violence in vulnerable communities. Visitors to the foundation can learn a lot about the work she did here and it is fantastic to see the positive impact that has been made already.
There are township tours available where you are driven through the area, get the chance to visit her memorial site and go into the schools and interact with the community and participate in activities. This will give you a great insight into the history of South Africa, the changes that are still happening and a look at how so many disadvantaged communities struggle each day.
