Between the mountainous and ruggedly beautiful towns of Worcester and Villiersdorp, in the Breede River Valley is Alvi's Drift Private Cellar, a family owned and run wine estate that boasts the highest in accolades. Alvi's Drift are passionate about creating exciting and interesting wine styles. Leading in quality and quantity, Alvi's Drift is proud to be at the top of wine-production in the newly formed Scherpenhuevel ward.
The estate, Alfalfa, dates back to 1928, is a 7000ha property and is owned by the Van der Merwe family whom has dedicated 410 of this flourishing landscape to 19 varieties of grape. The winery's name “Alvi's Drift” stems from the bridge built by Albertus Viljoen (Alvi) Van der Merwe (the 1st) in 1928 to access the estate, and was named by the locals of the time. Along with the winery you can find a dairy facility and even a game reserve with, among others, Eland, Springbok, Ostriches and Gemsbok.
The 6000 tons winery offers an extensive list of varieties from both the reds and whites supervised, from inception to the bottling, by the team of Alvi Van der Merwe, Henk Swart, who together produced the maiden vintage in 2004, and have since been joined in 2009 by the Australian Linley Schultz.
