About Alto Wine Estate

Alto’s beginnings start in 1693, where it was part of a farm named Groenrivier (Green River). In 1919 owner, Hennie Malan, divided the land, converted into a wine farm and name it Alto (testament to the vineyard’s altitude and their goals for it). They built a homestead, cellar and planted more red varieties. This area, high on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, is known as the Golden Triangle because the vineyards face north, north-east and north-west.

They get a lot of sunshine, but sea breezes ensure that the ripening period if lengthened. In 1983 Hempies du Toit continued the red wine making traditions until Schalk van der Westhuizen took over as winemaker. His first vintage in 2001 along with the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon and Alto Estate of 2001 has excelled and the Cabernet has been served on SAA First Class flights.

These shy-bearing vines have ensured the estates Alto Rouge maintains its superior status amongst South Africa’s top red wines and can be described as a typical Cape blend. The 1995 and 1996 vintages; blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc have all walked away with gold medals. Enjoy red wine sundowners or pate pairings at the estate.
