The AasvoŽlkraans hiking trail is situated in the picturesque Western Cape area of Montagu. Although it covers only 3.2 kilometres, it may take a little more than an hour to complete. It begins on Riebeeck Street.
The walk to the lookout point that showcases views of Cogmanskloof, Fort Sydney and the tunnel, is only 430 metres long. Because this is a fairly short, manageable hike, it is particularly suited to families with children. There is no entry fee and no permits are required. However, a permit is required for the remainder of the trail, and this can be obtained from the reserve entrance points (either at Joubertpark or the hot springs).
The beauty of the entire trail lies in the abundance of plant- and animal life in this area. Exciting faunal species include leopards, caracals, duikers, klipspringers, baboons, and hyraxes (or dassies). Plant species comprise Ericaís, proteas, lilies, gladioli, wild orchids and a huge variety of indigenous trees.
