The Pilanesberg National Park is ideally situated between the Kalahari and the Lowveld, putting it in the heart of one of the most ecologically diverse regions possible. As such, it showcases an impressive variety of plants and animals, including some of Africa’s wildest predators, within its borders.

To explore this incredible area on foot is something special. Feel the warmth of the African sun shining down on your face, smell the crisp air of the bush, and hear the sounds of the animals and birds as they rest, feed and care for their young in their natural habitat. These include the Big Five (elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard), as well as wild dog, sable, roan, and more than 360 different species of bird.

The guided hikes take visitors on trails through this natural wonderland, with the aid of a knowledgeable, experienced guide that understand the bush. This guide can track the animals and knows their rhythms like the beat of his or her own heart. With this insight, the guide ensures that hikers are kept safe while being shown some of the most exciting aspects of the park.

The trails are well marked and have been designed to allow hikers to observe the animals from a distance that is both safe for the hiker and comfortable for the animals. From beginning to end, the excursion takes about four hours to complete. Children under the age of 16 are not permitted on the hikes, and groups need to be booked in advance.

The Pilanesberg National Park is situated about three hours from Johannesburg and the OR Tambo International Airport, and occupies a total of 550 square kilometres.
