About Mphebatho Cultural Museum
Situated in the Pilansberg National Park just north of the Bakgatla gate is the Mphebath Cultural museum. Established in 1999, the idea was to preserve, remember and pass on cultural practices and tribal policies from the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela people.
You will learn where these people came from, how their culture developed as well as how their traditional lifestyle was affected and altered over the years through Christianity and European materialism. Build in the late 1930’s, the old school house which now houses this fascinating museum is decorated in customary cow dung design, detailing the gender roles held within the society.
Aside from very intriguing artifacts to be discovered you are also able to sit in the traditional boma for African story telling evenings or arrange cultural activities, dancing and African cuisine for special groups.
The Mphebatho Cultural Museum is open from 08h00 until 16h00 on weekdays or by prior arrangement on the weekends.
