Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, close to Rustenburg, offers a good two-day hiking trail on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg.
One can begin the trail at either of the two overnight camps – Avon More or Explorer Camp – although those who have done the trail recommend starting at Avon More, since it is the base camp.
Day one takes you up towards and through the Garden of Remembrance, after which you follow the Magaliesberg stream to Tierkloof Waterfall. There are rock pools further along the route that offer a perfect stop, before taking the summit of the Magaliesberg to the beacon at Bakenkop. A sharp descent brings you to Explorers camp.
Day two begins again with a climb, but it soon evens out with the path crossing the entrance road to the nature reserve. Continue down the mountain side to a stream, where after the path again climbs to the summit of the mountain. Views from up here are particularly good, and the trail remains on the summit until a descent, followed by a hairpin bend, brings one back to Avon More camp.
Highlights include: rock formations, the rock pools and Tierkloof Waterfall.
