Acclaimed as the last Art Deco cinema in the country, the Apollo Theatre has recently been revamped and reopened, to the delight of culture-vultures all over the country. This quirky theatre is in Victoria West, which is a Karoo town between Johannesburg and Cape Town that is full of character and charm.

The Apollo Theatre has an illustrious history, and the beautifully restored edition has retained much of that in keeping with the Art Deco theme, look and feel. In fact, a visit here will transport visitors back to the era of the 1920’s; when flappers, women’s lib, and an intriguing fashion movement towards all things elegant was the order of the day (think Great Gatsby in the heart of the Karoo).

The restaurant here, APPLOUS Café, has an a-la-carte menu that features some classic favourites and vintage options. There is also a collectables shop, where fantastic keepsakes can be explored and bought.

The Apollo Theatre is home to the Apollo Development Association, which is aimed at helping the local communities. One of the ways in which it does this is by hosting the Apollo Film Festival, which is popular for South African films to be showcased and enjoyed.

Victoria West is a flourishing Karoo town that has many beautiful old buildings, friendly people, and a vibe all its own. It is about six hours from Cape Town in the Western Cape and eight hours from Johannesburg in Gauteng.
