The Kruger National Park continues to be one of the world’s most popular game reserves. And it is no wonder, as it is a massive testimony to the abundance and diversity of South Africa. This is one of the many reasons that avid 4x4 enthusiasts are encouraged to visit this part of the world, experiencing it at a different pace, with a touch of adventure.
The Mananga 4x4 Trail starts just 11 kilometres north of Satara Rest Camp in Kruger, which is acclaimed as one of the best game viewing spots in the park. This is almost 160 kilometres from the little town of Hazyview, deep in the heart of the beautiful province of Mpumalanga; where mountains tower over deep gorges and history-laden villages; and where citrus and litchi orchards criss-cross the landscapes endlessly.
The Mananga 4x4 Trail is 48 kilometres long and is a circular route. It is a self-drive trail that takes between four and six hours to complete. Officially, it has a grading of one to three. It is made up of gravel management roads, as well as river beds, sandy stretches and dongas, to add to the challenge. The route can only be booked on the day at the camp and a maximum of six vehicles are permitted on the trail per day.
Nearby facilities include a petrol station, restaurant, swimming pool and shop. Of course, being so ideally situated, the Mananga Trail allows for excellent game viewing and bird watching opportunities. There are a number of hiking, walking and cycling trails within the vicinity, as well as bush walks, making this an experience for the whole family to enjoy.
