There has been proven success in the power of positive activities in keeping the youth away from social problems like drug abuse, teen pregnancies, sexually-transmitted diseases, crime and dropping out of high school. In response, the Born Biking Boards & Skate Park has established a non-profit organisation that provides a safe environment in which the community can skateboard or BMX. This is in the heart of Nelspruit, which is the capital city of Mpumalanga Province. This central locale gives a wider segment of the community access to the park.
This project aims to do more than simply provide a place to skate or ride. There are undercover eating facilities, pool tables, a lounge area in which extreme sports DVDs can be viewed, and a shop where sporting equipment and accessories can be bought. The Snack Shack provides refreshments, so families and friends can spend an entire day enjoying the fun.
Born Biking has designed this project to give the local community a sense of humility, accomplishment and purpose. There are strict rules – no violence, drugs or alcohol. Those wanting to use the park have to respect these in order to be a part of this exciting facility. It is a hub of activity that allows a sense of bonding amongst families and between members of the community.
This unique park is the only indoor skating park with a foam pit, meaning that it is ideal for younger ones or those that are still learning their way around a skateboard or BMX park.
Visitors are required to pay a small entrance fee of R30 to cover operational costs of the project. Sponsors and donors are being sought after to assist in and grow the proven success of Born Biking.
