About Limpopo Cultural Tours

Get a healthy dose of Limpopo-culture in one go!

Makhado (Louis Trichardt) enjoys its prime position at the foot of the Soutpansberg Mountain Range, right in the heart of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. This area, which is only 437 kilometres from Johannesburg (Gauteng), is steeped in natural beauty, but also in culture, history and heritage. And it is this variety and abundance that the Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge celebrates when it organises cultural tours and workshops for visitors to the region.

These tours and workshops are conducted in and around the Soutpansberg and Limpopo valleys, and into the northern areas that are bordered by Botswana and Zimbabwe, as well as by the incredible Kruger National Park.

The village tours provide a fantastic opportunity for visitors to get a real taste of South Africa, its people and their lifestyle. The Tsonga folk living around Elim are warm and inviting, delighted to welcome guests from all over the world to see how they live, work and relax. Along the way, you will see the beauty of the Limpopo Province and its biodiversity.

The creative workshops give visitors the privilege of meeting a local artist; someone that supports themselves and their family by creating gorgeous artwork that reflects the passion of a land and its people. The Dancing Fish Gallery is a live-in gallery that showcases some of the stunning arts and crafts coming out of Limpopo. Meet the artists and buy some of the pieces as a lasting memory of your time in South Africa.

The textile and design studio at the Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge is a working model of how some of the stunning curios and crafts are made, giving interesting insights into the artists’ work.

Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge supports around 40 local artists and takes an active role in organising exhibitions and workshops. This passion and faith in local talent goes a long way in showing the world what this Rainbow Nation has to offer.
