About Southport Beach

Southport Beach may be fairly quiet, but it is all kinds of fun and beautiful. Plus, it has the esteemed title of being awarded a Blue Flag status, which means that it is a step above many of its contemporaries. Blue Flag beaches need to meet a number of criteria, which range from their natural beauty, fauna and flora to their educational value and their facilities.

Southport Beach is largely secluded, with areas shaded by massive milkwood trees. The long stretches of sandy shores are perfect for sun-tanning, running, walking, or playing beach games. The rock pools and the tidal pool are perfect for little ones to explore and splash around in, especially if they are not ready to brave the waves. Life guards are on duty and there are clean ablutions for the convenience of Southport’s visitors. The beach has plenty of free parking too.

The ocean waters of Southport are particularly lovely because they are warmer, thanks to this being the Indian Ocean. This makes it pleasant to swim here almost all year round. What’s more, KwaZulu-Natal is sunny and balmy for most of the year too.

The waters are almost as much fun above as they are below. In addition to swimming and surfing, this beach is popular for snorkelling and SCUBA diving too. Visitors that are hankering after some adventure can head out for a memorable deep-sea fishing excursion. This stretch of the South African coastline is home to yellowfin tuna, marlin, sailfish, dorado, garrick, salmon and king mackerel. During the latter half of the year, whales can be seen passing Southport Beach, which is always massively impressive.

There is a restaurant-cum-pub on the beach, as well as a number of eateries nearby. There are also braai facilities for friends and families that want to enjoy the sea spray, fresh air and sunshine while savouring some delicious flame-grilled treats.

Southport Beach is only eight kilometres north of Port Shepstone, and about 1.5 hours from the King Shaka International Airport in Durban.
