About Newcastle Town Hall

Newcastle commenced building their town hall in 1897 in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubliee. Once building was completed in 1899, the town’s people started a collection for a clock to be added to the building. The Town Hall has been part of many historical events including the second Boer War where it was used to store furniture that was pillaged during this time.

A funny story that is always remembered is when the Orchestra were touring and performing here. The conductor stopped the performance due to what he thought was an inconsiderate person in the audience snoring. After investigation he found an owl in the clock tower making a noise, which he swiftly chased out and then continued with the concert. Now a National Monument, Newcastle Town Hall has been fully restored and still holds concerts.

Monuments have been erected outside in remembrance of those brave men who gave their lives during the Anglo Zulu War. This fascinating building is brimming with history and makes for an interesting visit.
