About The Little Church & Tea Garden
Dubbed "the best-kept secret on the M3", The Little Church of Van Reenen lies halfway between Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg in Gauteng. The church itself, the smallest in Van Reenen, is situated on the pass between Ladysmith and Harrismith. However, this is more than just the smallest church in the town and the Southern Hemisphere; it is actually very likely to be the smallest Roman Catholic Church in the world and is a National Monument.
The Little Church was built as a tribute to Llandaff Matthews, who was killed while attempting to save eight miners in 1925. So, the little church only has eight seats, one for each of the men who died; symbolic and deeply resonant. The Little Church has an undeniable sense of peace and tranquillity, which attracts visitors, no matter what their denomination.
Every year, the church hosts a commemoration to honour those surviving ones of the Matthews family. This is a delight for visitors to see and experience. Couples wanting something different for their wedding ceremony are invited to use The Little Chapel as their church of choice.
There is also a tea garden, which caters to children and pets, and a gift shop for mementoes and keepsakes.
