The warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the almost year-round sunshine, and the endless summer-holiday vibe are all part of the Lucien Beach experience. This beautiful beach in Margate is perched along the scenic Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, and is a non-stop hive of activity during the summer. Still, because of the awesome conditions that characterise KwaZulu-Natal almost all year round, the beach is fantastic on sunny winter days too.

Lucien Beach has been awarded Blue Flag status. This means that it has achieved excellence in its hygiene, safety, facilities, and educational value. This is no mean feat, and assures visitors to the beach that they can enjoy a fantastic time here.

Lifeguards are on duty all year round, assuring swimmers of their vigilance. And, thanks to its being less crowded than some of the other beaches in Margate and Durban, it is a fabulous escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The waters are great for swimming, hydrofoiling, and stand-up paddling; and the wide sandy shores are irresistible for romantic beach walks, building sandcastles, or relaxing with a good book. There is a tidal pool adjacent to the main area, which is a hit amongst families with little ones that don’t quite have their “sea legs” yet.

During the winter and autumn (in fact, extending from July to December), whales can often be seen blowing fountains and slapping their tails on the water’s surface as they pass this part of the South African coastline. Playful dolphins can be seen throughout the year.

The small shop here is convenient. In addition, keen shoppers can also explore an intriguing arts and crafts market around the parking lot. Here, Afro-centric goodies and other fun keepsakes can be found.

There are some steep stairs leading from the parking area to the beach, with no ramp access. Margate is just 25 minutes outside Port Edward, and about 1.5 hours from the CBD of Durban.
