About Birding In Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve
Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is one of the hottest birding spots in KwaZulu Natal and is a must visit for any bird or nature enthusiast. The area is beautiful offering breathtaking views and the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife. The reserve itself is 1837 hectares and is in the centre of a long stretch of gorge along the Mzimkhulwana River. Make sure you bring your binoculars and your camera to capture the beauty around you.
You are bound to see a large range of bird species such as the African Wood-Owl, Black Cuckoo Shrike, African Pygmy-Kingfisher, Olive Woodpecker, African Finfoot, Cape Vulture, Forest Buzzard, Brown-Scrub Robin, Narina Trogan, Lemon Dove, Purple Crested Ruraco and the Striped Pipit. Some of the Winter visitors consist of the Malachite Sunbird, Gurney’s Sugarbird and more.
