Dubbed the tourism gateway to Zululand and Maputaland, Richards Bay is characterised by its exquisite beaches and the gorgeous terrain that is so typical of the verdant, subtropical conditions of KwaZulu-Natal. The main swimming beach here is called Alkantstrand, which meals “both sides beach” in reference to the vast expanses of the Indian Ocean that surrounds visitors.

This clean, well-maintained beach was once South Africa’s northern-most Blue Flag beach. To get this prestigious title, the beach had to fulfil a number of strict criteria. Amongst other things, it had to have good quality water, great swimming condition, security, ablutions, and educational facilities. Alkantstrand continues to boast many of these great qualities.

Alkantstrand is open all year round and lifeguards are on duty for the safety of the swimmers. The balmy climate of KZN means that this makes for a great beach holiday destination, even out of the tourism season. The white sand is fabulous for a game of Frisbee, sunbathing, or enjoying a picnic with the family. But, there is also an inviting grassy area for picnics and barbecues (complete with braai sites for your convenience) in the natural forests of this coast. Water sports abound in the waves and swell; including surfing, canoeing, kiting and swimming.

Richards Bay’s working harbour means that those lazing on the beach can watch as the fishing boats and other vessels sail in and out of the harbour.

Alkantstrand remains one of KwaZulu-Natal’s loveliest and most inviting beaches for a summer holiday. Its home, Richards Bay, is about two hours from Durban and the King Shaka International Airport.
