Piatto Sandton overlooks the trendy Nelson Mandela Square, and is a large 180 seater restaurant, complete with a cigar bar and lounge. The Piatto chain of restaurants celebrate the Portuguese, a dash of Italian and Greek culture, offering the most loved dishes on their menu. Dishes are cooked in the traditional way, using the best and freshest ingredients and traditional herbs and spices.
Breakfast can be enjoyed from 10h30 in the morning, and dishes range from simple one egg breakfasts, to the more decadent Cypriot Breakfast and the Breakfast Burger. Wraps are a popular choice for lunch, with fillings ranging from Sirloin with basil mayonnaise, to Oak smoked salmon. Delicious gourmet sandwiches are filled with such delights as crumbed chicken breast with Camembert cheese, to Pan-fried chicken livers, sautéed with onions. For more formal occasions, the starter menu groans with tasty Mediterranean delights, from Mussels poached in cream, to Garlic Snails, with three sauces. With Patagonian Calamari tubes, prawns, Squid Heads and Grilled Artichokes on the menu, one is hard-pressed to choose favourites. The pasta menu is more extensive than most trattoria’s have on offer, and we were really impressed with the delicate sauces and fresh seafood used in many of the dishes. From the grill, the Bife A’ Portuguesea is your quintessential Portuguese steak, topped with a fried egg, like mama used to make.
Things get adventurous with dishes such as the Rump Bistek, which is filled with feta cheese, chilli and bacon – and covered in a cheese sauce! Their Lamb Kleftico is made from fall-off-the-bone tender lamb cooked in the pizza oven, while tender Veal Limone is sautéed in lemon butter. Meat enthusiasts will be please with the Combos, which boast rib combination dishes, or steak and prawns. Customer favourites are the Prego Roll, the Piatto Schwarma and the massive burgers with taste bud tingling toppings.
