The township of Orange Farm lies roughly 42 kilometers from the city centre of Johannesburg - one of the largest informal settlements in the country. It is also regarded as one of Johannesburg's most isolated communities, geographically, and has high levels both of unemployment, and poverty.
But the City has a number of initiatives within the community to help with upliftment that include a modern library, tarring of some of the roads, low cost housing, clinics, and Orange Farm Regional park – a 4.5 hectare park just off Regional Street in Extension 1 that has a series of swings, a jungle gym, a roundabout and other children's playground equipment. It also has a series of benches for those who come to sit.
Orange Farm is one of the parks in which you will find Township TV screens, erected before the soccer World Cup 2010, but also to screen educational and sports programmes during the week. Most recently they also carried the 'State of the Nation Presidential Address' along with the other parks that also have screens.
