The spotless beauty of the South African terrain is put on a display of the prettiest sort at the Modderfontein Nature Reserve, which is only a short drive from Johannesburg’s city centre and the OR Tambo International Airport. While any visit to the reserve is well worth it, it really does promise something special when tackled from the saddle of a bicycle.
Cycling allows you to explore parts of the reserve that are not accessible by car; enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, tweeting birds and the smell of the bush. It also allows you to adjust your pace and meander the trails at a speed that suits you. Modderfontein invites cyclists to try out the four main routes, which are designed to suit all (or most) riding abilities. This means that beginners (or those simply wanting a fun day out with the family) are able to relax and cycle at a slow, comfortable pace; while pros that want to challenge themselves are also able to push their limits here.
The routes are:
1. Orange Route (10 kilometres)
2. Green Route (18 kilometres)
3. Yellow (32 kilometres)
4. Red (42 kilometres)
While there are no major technical areas on any of the routes, the dirt roads and increasing distance provide that extra challenge. Of course, there are areas in which cyclists need to tackle slopes, dodge trees, cross streams and balance on bridges. The routes run off one another, and all promise wonderful views of the countryside. Every Wednesday, there is a night ride from 18h00 to 22h00, which adds a new dimension to the excitement.
The Modderfontein Ride Free Bike Park is open every day from 06h00 to 18h00. There is 24-hour security, a chill zone, safe parking, and ablutions. There is also the Dobbs House Restaurant here for an ice-cold refreshment and a hearty meal after some time in the saddle.
