Mary Gunn Library in Pretoria

Mary Gunn was a clerk in the Department of Agriculture’s Botany Division in 1916. She was assigned the mammoth job of establishing a botanical library in Pretoria. Today, her efforts reflect in this library’s being the most comprehensive botanical library on the continent.

Situated in the National Herbarium at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, Ms Gunn’s library was populated by her acquiring gifts, as well as purchasing and exchanging books until she had enough of a variety for the public. To this day, the exchange programme remains one of the chief ways in which Mary Gunn Library gets new books.

The Africana and Rare Antiquarian Book Collection is one of the boasts of this library. Mary Gunn has more than 11 700 books and 1 000 journal titles. These cover botany, global warming, biodiversity, ecology, palaeobotany, and much more.
